The IMAX-enveloping, cyclist-frightening roundabout in Waterloo is set for a dramatic overhaul.
The roundabout at the foot of Waterloo Bridge is widely considered one of London’s most nerve-wracking. Concerns over safety are frequently cited as one of the key reasons people do not cycle in the Waterloo area, according to TfL, and Walking & Cycling Commissioner Will Norman calls it ‘one of the most dangerous junctions in London.’
So in early 2020, it’ll be completely redeveloped, with ‘segregated cycle lanes, cycle-specific traffic lights, wider footpaths, a full redesign of the intimidating junction and vastly improved public spaces.’
And critically, it will no longer be a full roundabout, similar to the changes at Elephant & Castle. Here’s what it’ll look like (click to embiggen)
All in all, it should be a less hair-raising experience for everyone. Shame we’ve got two years to wait, but in the meantime you can keep yourself entertained with the scintillating 62 pages of the full consultation document.
