For the first time in over thirty years, the pound coin is getting replaced. Due to its vulnerability to sophisticated counterfeiters, the coin is now equipped with a visible hologram and invisible security feature… shh!
The Royal Mint will be introducing the new coins into circulation on 28th March 2017 and the legal tender status of the round £1 coin will be withdrawn on 15th October 2017. That means if you have piggy banks or pockets of spare change with old pound coins, you should use them or take them to your bank.
There will be a six month period when the old and new coins will overlap but don’t worry, during this time you can use both to make payments. But what do the new ones look like?
First up, it’s the end of the round pound as this new coin has 12 sides. They’re thinner and lighter than their predecessors but a little larger in diameter. They also have a bold new design that incorporates the English rose, the Welsh leek, the Scottish thistle and the Northern Irish shamrock.
Dubbed “the most secure coin in the world”, we cannot wait till we get to see these new shiny coins from the 28th! Share photos and talk about the new coin with the hashtag #newpoundcoin.
