Here’s a delightful story to finish off the working week – complete with adorable baby animals. In a post to Instagram today, Hackney City Farm revealed that one of their animals had given birth earlier this week. None other than Penny the pig gave birth to 10 adorable little piglets. And you can visit them this weekend!
Penny gave birth just a few nights ago. According to Hackney City Farm:
“She is such a good mum and is getting lots of very well deserved cuddles from our staff”.
And, knowing how excited London’s baby-animal-adoring population would be to visit, they shared the following update:
“[The piglets]have had a few days to themselves but [we’ll] be open to visit this weekend! Come and welcome them to the farm”.
Penny only recently arrived on the farm as their most recent pig on loan. The staff describe her as “really friendly and [she] loves a tummy rub”.
In a few weeks, she’ll return to her home at a working outdoor farm attached to an open women’s prison. At the farm, “incarcerated people are taught animal skills such as pig keeping and rearing at the end of their sentence.”

The newborn piglets come in the wake of other recent additions to the farm. Lambing season saw adorable little lambs joining the farm back in March and April. This followed yet more new baby animals in the form of newborn goats, who were born back in March.
As well as the pigs, sheep, and goats, Hackney City Farm is also home to donkeys, ducks, geese, and chickens.
The farm provides a valuable resource for those growing up in the city to learn about animals. As they explain, “It can be hard for children in London to access and learn about animals and so we hope to help educate.”
