The Greenground Map also includes kayaking spots as well as viewpoints.
Us Londoners have seen our fair share of maps, from the newly revamped Tube map to more obscure variations such as where to get the cheapest pint at each Tube station and the meanings behind every Tube station name. Regardless of our love/hate relationship with the London Underground, there is a new style of the map with a green twist that we think you’ll particularly like.

Known as The Greenground Map, it offers a more sustainable route when visiting green spaces in the city and is perfect if you’re looking to get some fresh air. Designed by Helen Ilus, the ‘green lines’ represent the connections between parks which you can either access on foot or by bike. The nature-loving map has 12 lines outlining the city’s waterways, including the River Thames and Grand Regent Canal, and local outdoor spaces nearby.
Not only does the map show you the parks and open spaces in London, totalling to 400, but it also shows the walking distances between parks, plus it plots ferry piers, kayaking and swimming spots as well as places for bird watching and viewpoints. The Greenground map includes iconic, north London viewpoints such as Hampstead Heath and Primrose Hill, as well as lesser-known ones like Telegraph Hill and Horniman Museum Gardens in south-east London.
And if you’re lacking in local walking inspo, the designer has even gone as far as locating the green ways (long linear parks usually by the waterway or railway tracks) and sketched in some new suggestions for creative walking loops. However, Helen Ilus says, “this diametrical map does not show the exact routes, but rather acts as a starting point in planning more precise journeys.”

According to London National Park City, the Greenground map is mainly “an experiment to represent London’s green spaces as a accessible map for Londoners, inspiring to take alternative, green route for commute or leisure.”
“Many Londoners are stuck in transport system and this map helps to see London is more than spending time in the traffic. People who plan their journeys via greener and quieter routes, choosing walking or cycling over regular transport, are much happier and calmer than other commuters. The Greenground map inspires to take use of the parkways and waterways as alternative to crowded main streets and busy transport hubs,” said London National Park City, who are a movement to help improve life in the capital.
The Greenground map is free to download here however if you fancy a printed version to fit in your pocket, or even a poster, you can buy these from Helen Ilus’ website.
