Freakshakes. The colossal dairy drink that has left London in a state of perpetual food coma’d sugary highs and lows. That is, all except vegans. Because believe it or not, these creamy concoctions contain milk and eggs. Along with a whole lot of other naughty nibbles that also contain gluten, such as brownies. And cookies. And meringue…
But fear not, you sensitive stomachs, you, as of yesterday a café in east London is serving up gluten-free and vegan monster milkshakes! The Canvas Café will be serving shakes made with homemade vegan ice cream (consisting of coconut milk that is then blended with soya milk), coming in raspberry, chocolate and avocado flavours. Toppings include a vegan meringue made with aquafaba – the juice from a can of chickpeas which is currently a very hot ingredient in the world of vegan cooking as when whipped up with vanilla and maple syrup it acts like egg whites – as well as vegan and gluten-free brownies. YUM!
The three flavours available are raspberry and coconut, topped with raw beetroot cakes; avocado, chocolate and raw matcha; and dark chocolate with vegan meringues. The raw base of each cake is made with dates and nuts, and can be topped with a variety of sauces such as cranberry, raspberry, homemade vegan Nutella and chopped pistachios. Plus, not only are these delicious drinks dairy and gluten-free, most of the sugars in them are natural!
Sound too good to be true? Guess you’ll have to try to believe it…we certainly will! What a shame….
