Im Westen Londons, in der Nähe der Chiswick High Road, findet einmal im Monat ein Fest rund um das Thema Käse statt. Der Chiswick Cheese Market, auch Cheesewick genannt, zieht durch die Straßen, um den Gouda und alles, was mit Käse zu tun hat, zu verbreiten. Der Termin für den Markt in diesem Monat rückt schnell näher: Cheesewick findet am Sonntag (20. Oktober) statt.
Und dieser Name? Das ist kein reiner Zufall. Schließlich war Chiswick ursprünglich unter dem Namen Cheesewick bekannt, was so viel wie „Käsefarm“ bedeutet. (Städte und Dörfer, die auf „wick“ enden, beziehen sich oft auf eine Art von Bauernhof). Es gab keinen anderen Ort, an dem ein richtiger Käsemarkt hätte stattfinden können.
Stellen Sie sich das mal vor: ein ganzer Markt, der nur dem Käse gewidmet ist. Klingt das nicht einfach großartig? Und es gibt nicht nur Käseproduzenten und -händler, sondern auch Lebensmittelhändler, die mit Käse gefüllte Köstlichkeiten anbieten, und Stände, die alle möglichen Zutaten für die perfekte Käseplatte verkaufen. Ganz gleich, ob Sie einen neuen Käse probieren möchten, spezielle Sauerteigcracker, den perfekten Wein dazu, Honig aus der Region oder sogar die Käseplatte selbst – es gibt einen Stand für Sie.
Oh, und es gibt viele Gelegenheiten, nach Herzenslust Käse zu probieren. Ja, bitte!
Ein genauerer Blick auf die Käsestände von Cheesewick
An den Käseständen selbst gibt es ein riesiges Angebot. Das ist sicher nicht die durchschnittliche Käseauswahl im Supermarkt! Aber das ist ja auch der Sinn der Sache. An Ständen wie Cheese on the Wey, Nut Knowle Farm und Bath Cheese Co werden einige der besten Käsesorten aus dem Vereinigten Königreich in kleinen Mengen angeboten. Dann gibt es italienische Angebote wie Gastronomica und Drunk Cheese, französische Käsesorten wie Dispensamor und The French Comté und vieles mehr. Es gibt sogar einen von Stanley Tucci anerkannten Stand in Form von La Latteria/Thee Olive Tree, der in Tuccis Serie „Taste of Italy“ zu sehen war.
Und das sind nur die Käsestände, denn es lohnt sich zu wiederholen! Wenn Sie hungrig werden, können Sie sich an einem epischen gegrillten Käse von Grate & Grill oder einem Topf mit Fondue gefüllten Mac ’n‘ Cheese von Mac Junkies laben. Es gibt sogar authentischen baskischen Käsekuchen von La Maritxu, falls Sie noch Platz für eine Nachspeise haben.
Ganz ehrlich, können Sie sich eine bessere Art vorstellen, den Tag zu verbringen, als von Käse, Käse und noch mehr Käse umgeben zu sein? Na ja, es sei denn, Sie sind laktoseintolerant…
