Have you ever looked around at London’s skyscrapers and wondered just how tall they really are, in human terms? Or wondered how long it would take to travel all the way to the top of one of them? And what if you could raise money for a good cause, all while answering those questions? Then you might want to join in on the upcoming Walkie Talkie Tower Climb.
Organised by The Great Ormond Street Hospital Charity (aka GOSH), the fundraising event will take place in London next month, on March 28. It’s a special anniversary for the event, too, as it enters its tenth year of fundraising. This year’s event will see tens of thousands of pounds being raised for the hospital, supporting its mission to “give seriously ill children childhoods that are fuller, funner and longer.”
So far, 281 people have signed up to take part in the event. Between them, they’ve already raised £39,130!
Climbing the Walkie Talkie
Now, let’s be clear, this is not some Alex Honnold-esque feat that sees Londoners scaling the vertical outside walls of the building. Instead, participants will climb the building by way of the stairs. They can walk, run, or sprint their way to the top.
But just because they’re using the stairs, that doesn’t mean it’s going to be easy! Participants will have to make their way up 36 floors to the very top of the building. Along the way, they’ll climb a whopping 896 steps. But at the top, they’ll be rewarded with a celebratory drink and spectacular views of London from the beautiful Sky Garden.

They’ll also be rewarded with the knowledge that their effort has helped raise funds for a truly good cause. And that’s sure to spur anyone struggling to make it to the top to dig deep and make it all the way to the 36th floor.
Who can do the Walkie Talkie Tower Climb?
Anyone can sign up to do the Walkie Talkie Tower Climb – assuming they’re physically able to complete the activity.
There is a £30 sign-up fee, and participants are expected to raise a minimum of £250. As part of the sign-up, participants will receive a race pack, which includes a “bespoke t-shirt and race number, celebratory drink and medal.”
