One of the most exciting things about living in London is the sheer amount of history that surrounds us. Our city is home to many internationally renowned landmarks and historic sites. And you can even take a peek inside most of them! One of the most impressive examples is the iconic Big Ben – which re-opened to visitors last year with its impressive Big Ben tours.
The last few years saw a very gradual countdown of sorts to the end of a vast conservation project in the middle of London. For years, Big Ben had been wrapped in scaffolding and curiously silent. Slowly, the layers of scaffolding were peeled away, and the iconic clock tower’s ‘bong’ was even heard through London again. And following the almost six-year project coming to a close, Big Ben re-opened to the public last year – just in time for summer. And naturally, one of the main draws is now being able to climb all the way to the top!
Exploring the iconic landmark
Clock fans, people named Ben, and others keen to see the inner workings of the tower can join 90-minute-long guided tours that take them up a whopping 334 stairs. These vertical treks take visitors all the way up to the Elizabeth Tower Belfry as the famous clock chimes sound around them. Along the way, visitors can check out the clock mechanism room, look behind the four clock dials , and, of course, view the Belfry (where the famous bell itself is located).
It’s important to note that there are some restrictions on who can do the tours. All visitors must be over 11 years of age. They also must be able, and comfortable, to climb the 334 stairs without aid.
Additionally, due to security, health and safety, and copyright restrictions, there is no photography allowed inside the Elizabeth Tower. You can, however, take photographs inside Westminster Hall before or after the tour.
