Did you know that the average Brit will eat a whopping 208 of their dinners in front of the TV each year? And did you also know that four and a half years of the average adult’s lifetime is spent watching telly? Some pretty wild statistics, right? And whilst you probably think we’re here to be good influences and urge you to avert your eyes from the TV screen, and get out and explore the wonderful city we live in; we’re actually here to tell you about a restaurant that’s opening later this month, where you’re wholeheartedly encouraged to eat your dinner in front of the TV. (Sorry, mum).
In response to a recent study which looked at the nations television habits; the world’s first TV dinner restaurant is soon going to be popping up in the capital city. Using food science to level up the humble dinner-in-front-of-the-telly experience, the pop-up spot arrives in London on July 17, courtesy of the new TV streaming service, U.
For one day only, some telly-loving Londoners will be able to pay a visit to the TV dinners restaurant and dine on dishes that have been carefully curated by food scientist, Dr Stuart Farrimond. By perfectly pairing the food they’re serving with the TV shows available; the restaurant aims to truly enhance TV dinners. Just when I thought they couldn’t get any better…
Dr Farrimond identified five television genres available on U, and then spent hours in the kitchen, testing recipes and flavour combos to create dishes, designed to be enjoyed in front of the box. The genres include Factual and Real Life (where diners will enjoy calming foods that aid clear thinking), Entertainment and Comedy (where guests can munch on a mood-boosting menu), Action and Adventure (dishes made with intense flavours for added excitement), Comforting Classics (a menu of familiar and cosy comfort food), and Crime Drama (food that will evoke intrigue).
Once visitors have selected their meal and their programme, they can pop in their headphones, make themselves comfy, and indulge in their good, old-fashioned TV dinner. You just can’t beat it, can you?
Dr Stuart Farrimond, Food Science Expert, said: “The fact that TV dinners were invented in the 1950s is testament to how, for as long as televisions have been in our homes, we have eaten in front of them. The combination of good food and a great TV show offers an immersive escape and a multisensory experience that Brits love to enjoy. By applying the latest flavour science research to the selection of TV shows available on the free streaming platform U, I have devised meals that, whether you’re watching a comforting classic or edge-of-your-seat crime drama, are designed to intensify and enhance the TV viewing experience.”
The TV Dinners restaurant will be open on July 17 between 6.30-9.30pm. A limited amount of tickets are available to book now. Snap up a ticket here.
