The room
We checked into the Edwardian Cabin Suite, and let’s just say: if you’re going to time travel, this is exactly how to do it. The suite is a stunning homage to early 1900s elegance, boasting enough rich mahogany to fill a country manor, paired with a scholarly charm that beckons you to pen postcards with an authentic fountain pen. There’s an antique leather-topped kidney-shaped desk (yes, it truly exists), a walnut armchair so plush it seems to embrace you, and a marble-topped floor lamp that truly deserves a devoted Instagram following.
Simply put, it’s the best hotel room I have ever stayed in.
It doesn’t feel like stepping back in time – it feels like slipping into someone else’s perfectly preserved moment, as if through a cinematic, sepia-toned lens. There is a hush to the suite, a serene calm that eventually aided to a really wonderful 9-hour slumber. It’s the kind of room that makes you feel as though you’re starring in a BBC period drama.
For fans of symmetry and stylised nostalgia, the Art Deco Cabin Suite embraces black-and-white sophistication, while the Mid-Century Cabin Suite exudes Mad Men-era cool with powder blue Danish seating and sleek chrome finishes. If your tastes run toward unrestrained 1980s decadence, the Dynasty Cabin Suite tosses subtlety aside for lucite coffee tables and unabashed glamour.
But of course, this is Sea Containers – where style never sacrifices substance. Each suite comes with a bespoke, era-inspired bottled cocktail, crafted masterfully by the award-winning Lyaness bar. Ours disappeared within moments of arrival (strictly in the name of research, naturally).
Just when we thought happy hour had peaked, we learned we had arrived just in time for “Negroni-o’clock.” Yes, it’s a real thing. At a certain golden hour, a charming gentleman appears, cocktail trolley in tow, ready to shake, stir, and serve freshly made Negronis right at your door. It’s the kind of thoughtful luxury that makes you wonder why every hotel doesn’t have roving bartenders.
With stunning views of the Thames shimmering outside, we were honestly tempted to cancel all our plans and simply stay in our room.
The food
That said, the dining experience downstairs is well worth dressing up (or simply heading down) for. Sea Containers Restaurant delivers an elegant, globetrotting menu that strikes the perfect balance between luxury and laid-back comfort.
We began with Yellowtail Tuna Crudo, sliced with surgical precision and dressed in citrus, sesame, and a flirtation of chilli heat. The Seabass Ceviche Tacos were miniature towers of joy, packed with red onion salsa and coriander in crisply perfect shells that vanished far too quickly.
Then came the main event: the Dry-Aged Boston Rib Steak, cooked to perfection, bathed in a rich, glossy green peppercorn sauce that nearly compelled us to lick the plate. It was accompanied by two sides – our choice of Butter Lettuce with avocado and herbs, a verdant palate cleanser drizzled in shallot dressing, and a classic yet confident Caesar Salad, punctuated with anchovy, parmesan, and croutons. And the Hispi Cabbage with crispy shallots? Prepare to see leafy greens in an entirely new light.
Full and content, we rolled back to the Edwardian suite.
