We’re used to seeing the royals pop up in London, whether it’s at a local boozer or visiting an iconic London business. But the heir to the throne was spotted in a particularly unusual way this week.
Yesterday, Tuesday 13 October, Prince William shut down the road outside of Buckingham Palace to partake in a spot of cricket. It’s not a sight you’ll often see, but it was all for a good cause — to celebrate the Earthshot Prize being hosted in Mumbai next month.
Cricket with the prince on The Mall
Prince William took to The Mall, the street most well known for royal and military parades, to practise his batting skills. The Mall, famous for its distinctive red colour, runs from Trafalgar Square to Buckingham Palace.
The prince wasn’t the only famous face to take part in the sport; England test captain Joe Root, cricket legend Brian Lara and ex-Indian captain Sourav Ganguly were also spotted. TV personality Greg James was also in attendance.
Cricket is a shared passion in both Britain and India and the event aimed to celebrate the ties between the two countries, with the Earthshot Prize awards ceremony taking place in Mumbai on 17 November. This will be the sixth annual awards.
What exactly is the Earthshot Prize? Founded in 2020 by the prince himself, it is a global environmental award that aims to celebrate solutions to repair the planet by 2030. This year five finalists will each win £1 million. If you want to catch the ceremony, you’ll be able to stream it on Prime for the first time.
The future king was not the only royal spotted out and about in London this week, as the Princess of Wales, Kate Middleton, and Princess Charlotte were spotted taking a ride on the Elizabeth Line.
