If there’s one thing that we can probably agree New York does better than London, it’s the slice shop. By this, we specifically mean the ubiquitous pizza spots where you can pop in and grab a single (but typically huge) slice of pizza for a mere couple of bucks, and be on your way. But as London’s reputation for great pizza grows every year – we’ve also seen some spots popping up that attempt to emulate the New York tradition. These spots are great for the not-so-hungry or for those wanting to order enormous pies to share. Here’s a rundown of our favourite spots to get pizza by the slice in London:
1. World Famous Gordos, Hackney Central
Over in Netil Market, you’ll find a familiar name slinging slices out of a slice shop shack (try saying that three times fast!). World Famous Gordos made a reputation for themselves with a range of pop-ups all across East London before settling down next to London Fields to sling out some of London’s best ‘zas.
The World Famous Gordo’s team was recently awarded ‘best classic slice’ at the Slice O Mania pizza festival, so you know they’re working from a great base template. But they’re also more than happy to play around and experiment. Their pepperoni slice comes with everything bagel seasoning on the crust, and specials have included the likes of spam-topped, hotdog-topped, kimchi-topped, and even mac and cheese-topped creations.
📍 Unit C, 13, 23 Westgate Street, E8 3RL.
🚇 The nearest station is London Fields.
2. Slice Club, Hackney Wick
The first rule of Fight Club Slice Club is you don’t talk about Slice Club. But, honestly, we love the pizzas here so much that we couldn’t resist! This charming and friendly spot in Hackney Wick is equally suited to swinging by and grabbing a slice to quickly munch on or to hang out all afternoon long with your mates. And instead of opening endless bags of crisps to line the stomach, you can enjoy a steady procession of delicious New York-style slices.
📍 East Wing Oslo House, 7 Prince Edwards Road, Hackney, E9 5LX.
🚇 Nearest station is Hackney Wick.
3. Homeslice, Various Locations
Homeslice have become legendary in London for their table-dominating pizzas – which measure up to 20-inches-wide – seriously! If that all sounds a bit much, then you’ll be pleased to know that you can also buy it by the slice.
You can choose from a range of toppings, including classics like margherita, mushroom or salami, as well as plenty of more experimental choices. Prices range from £4.50 to £5.50 per slice. They also do an amazing range of sides and cocktails here – from espresso martinis to mojitos. Date night for one perhaps?
📍You’ll find Homeslice at various different locations in London. You can find out more here.
4. Joe Public, Clapham
Joe Public opened its doors (of an old derelict public toilet, might we add) back in March 2016, and they did a hell of a good job transforming the former bog into a pizza restaurant-slash-bar. They dish up freshly-baked pizza slices from a menu that changes daily. Now that we can get on board with (sorry).
Prices range from £3.50 – £5 and the flavours include a variety of classic toppings and contemporary twists (think chicken and chorizo, halloumi and oregano, or native mushrooms with crispy shallots and truffle oil). But it’s not all about pizza here – they’ve also got lunchtime butties, craft beers, wines and ciders too. Winner, winner!
📍You’ll find Joe Public at 4 The Pavement, London, SW4 0HY.
🚇 Nearest station is Clapham Common.
5. Arancina, Notting Hill Gate
One of the best places to get pizza by the slice in London is Arancina – a Sicilian pizza restaurant in Notting Hill that does things the traditional way. They’re made with a blend of premium flours, fired in a stone bake oven and served on a traditional wooden board – and made with a secret ingredient that the owners won’t give up. And you know how much we love a secret here at Secret London…
Flavours include the ‘Vegan Glory’, the ‘Carnivora’ and the classic ‘Romana’, so there’s something for everyone here. Add in the fact that they also have some delectable arancini balls and scrummy tiramisu on the roster, and you can see why we love this place.
📍You’ll find Arancina at 19 Pembridge Road, London, W11 3HG.
🚇 Nearest station is Notting Hill Gate.
6. Detroit Pizza, Spitalfields
Baked in authentic ‘blue steel’ pans, Detroit Pizza’s wares are almost akin to a pizza-topped focaccia, for the sheer airy doughiness – but we’re gonna argue that they’re 100x better. Think rich sauce, crispy cheesy crust, and incredible, sloppy toppings to boot. As the name suggests, this particular style of pizza hails from Detroit – and it might be one of our favourite pizza styles of all time. In terms of pizza by the slice, you’ve got two options here: choose from the classic ‘Red Stripe’ (parmesan and red sauce) or the ‘Pepperoni’. They’re keeping it simple, but nonetheless delicious.
To enjoy other flavours or full pies, take a seat and choose from a range of other delicious pies. Or you can head to their recently-opened Islington restaurant to enjoy the full-on Italian American dining experience. The menu here includes everything from Chicken Parm to Deep Fried Lasagna and their enormous Sicilian Meatballs. And of course the Detroit Pizza – it’s in the name after all!
📍You’ll find Detroit Pizza at 75 Commercial Street, London, E1 6BD.
🚇 Nearest stations are Aldgate East and Liverpool Street.
7. Voodoo Ray’s, Dalston & Peckham
Another great spot where you can get a hold of pizza by the slice in London is Voodoo Ray’s – a NYC-inspired joint based in both Dalston and Peckham. As well as giant 22-inch pizzas – yep, seriously – they also do all their flavours by the slice for just a few quid. And those flavours are seriously all to die for.
While you can’t exactly go wrong, our favourites might just be the ‘Giorgio Moroder’ – which consists of goats cheese, sunblush tomatoes, courgette and basil – and the ‘Hot Mix 5’ – a heavenly concoction of pepperoni, jalapeño, red chillies and red pepper. Even better, they do cheap deals on Mondays, have raucous drag brunches and are open until the wee hours on Fridays and Saturdays. Post-pub sesh pizza slice anyone?
📍You’ll find Voodoo Ray’s at 95 Kingsland High Street, London, E8 2PB and 285 Rye Lane, London, SE15 4UA.
🚇 Nearest stations are Dalston Junction and Peckham Rye.
8. Bad Boy Pizza Society, Various Locations
Rounding off this list of the best places to get pizza by the slice in London is the Bad Boy Pizza Society, which actually started out as a ‘parody university society, aiming to get discount pizza for all the crew’. It’s now grown to a number of different branches across the city, each of which specialises in a different style of pizza. For the New York slice experience, head to their Covent Garden location in the Seven Dials Market. Slices start at just under a fiver, with deals available for purchases of multiple slices – or even whole 22″ pizzas!
Their Pepperoni Alla Vodka Sicilian Pie scooped up the ‘National Pizza of the Year’ award at the National Pizza Awards in 2022, so rest assured that they know what they’re doing.
