After London’s Eid-al-Fitr celebrations commenced in glorious fashion last week, another symbol marking the festivities is taking place in the capital. Coinciding with Eid In The Square, the large-scale event in Trafalgar Square, the London Eye will light up to mark the occasion on the same day (April 20).
As the sun sets in the city, the London Eye will don its green lights once again, which symbolises the Muslim faith through the colours on flags, architecture and Islamic arts.
Just as it has done over the last two years, the landmark by the Southbank will mark the end of Ramadan and the celebration of Eid-al-Fitr, with a display that can be viewed all across the city.
Eid-al-Fitr commenced on April 10 and involves a three-day festival, following the month-long celebration of Ramadan, which involves fasting during hours of sunlight each day. Ever since this day, there have been plenty of further celebrations in London, which culminates with the 19th edition of Eid In The Square and the lighting up of the London Eye.
The theme of Eid In The Square this year is ‘identity’, and the event hopes to celebrate this along with diversity and the spirit of the community, with a message of unity to the 1.4 million Muslims across the city of London and to those beyond the capital.
