Last week marked the end of the month of Ramadan, which signifies the arrival of huge celebrations in the form of Eid-al-Fitr. These celebrations will take place across London and the world. And, this Saturday (April 20), one of the largest gatherings to mark Eid is taking place in the capital, as Eid In The Square returns for its 19th year.
What is planned for Eid In The Square in 2024?
To celebrate Eid-al-Fitr, Trafalgar Square will host a roster of events to mark the end of Ramadan, the holy month in the Muslim calendar which involves fasting throughout the hours of daylight.
This year’s theme once again supports Mayor Sadiq Khan’s “Love For Everyone” campaign. The campaign focuses on family and bringing communities together for celebrations.
Expect to see the large main stage in full swing once again, with a mix of contemporary acts to keep everyone entertained. Rising British comedian Ola Labib will host the main stage entertainment, alongside TV and radio presenter, and DJ, Yasser Ranjha. Among the entertainments planned for the day are Muslim Belal, Indonesia Angklung Ensemble, Star Voices Children’s Choir, Al Awde Zafa and Dabke Group, and Members of the Orchestra of Syrian Musicians. There will even be a performance from the Chahat Mahmood Ali Qawwal and Group, who have come all the way from Pakistan for the occasion.
That’s hardly everything, though, with activities and attractions scattered around the square. There will be everything from calligraphy workshops to Indonesian dance displays, exhibits, VR experiences, interactive football sessions, henna and face painting, and much more. Everyday Muslim will be on hand to present the “Identi-Tree live exhibition where you can record your own story, have your portrait taken and explore your heritage.”
And, naturally, there will also be plenty of food, with a globe-spanning offering that ranges from churros to Koreanese fusion corn dogs, shawarma, Pakistani and Sri Lankan street food, and more.
This year also sees a return of the Inspiring Muslim Awards, which debuted at Eid In The Square last year. Their theme for 2024 is ‘identity’, and a string of awards including ‘The Identity Champion’ and The Identity Art’ will be announced on the day. Inspiring Muslim Awards aims to champion the achievements of Muslims across London and inspire younger Muslims in attendance.
Eid In The Square is a free event for the whole family, taking place between midday and 6pm. Anyone hoping to attend can find out more information here.
