The Amalfi Coast is one of Italy’s most sought after destinations for holidayers with a hankering for beautiful beaches, colourful towns, and proper limoncello. The gorgeous coastline is just one long Unesco heritage site, meaning it is officially ‘of outstanding universal value to humanity’. However, despite its iconic status, it’s not all that easy to get to from the UK.
As things are right now, you’ll need to fly into Naples and either drive or catch a ferry to wherever you’re staying along the coast, which will take you well over an hour. That’s valuable time out of your trip (read: fewer Aperol Spritz). But it’s all about to get much easier, especially for Londoners.
This summer, easyJet is launching flights directly from London Gatwick to a newly commercialised airport between Salerno and the Amalfi Coast. The airport, called Salerno Costa d’Amalfi airport, has actually been around since 1926, when it opened as a military air hub. It had a short stint as a commercial airport from the late noughties, but closed for training and private purposes eight years ago. Now, it has big plans to open again this summer, with flights from London Gatwick starting on July 13, 2024. There will be two flights a week and, at the time of writing, prices start at just £33.57.
