What’s with London and all these fantasy bridges at the moment? With a new garden bridgeset to make the route between Lambeth and Westminster a little more scenic, it seems like all architects are now flooding to the Thames, all keen to propose a little new chunk of infrastructure. This one isn’t so little though.
[Rotherhithe Bridge]Architect firm reForm has come up with a plan to build a new bridge that would connect Rotherhithe to Canary Wharf. But this ain’t no normal bridge, oh no. At 84m long, this is the world’s longest drawbridge. In comparative terms, it’s the equivalent of two-and-a-half jumbo jets. The bridge would open and close in just four minutes and would be free to use for cyclists and pedestrians.
[Rotherhithe Bridge]And the cost? Why, a mere £88 MILLION of course. And before you get too excited, it could take up to five years to build. In other words, don’t get your knickers in a twist quite yet.
