You’ll be hard-pressed to find an ocean here in London, but you can see some real-life penguins over at London Zoo.
What happens, though, when you find yourself far astray from Regent’s Park and in the uncharted waters of (*checks notes*) Tottenham Court Road and get a sudden urge to catch a sighting of a marine bird? For the next week, the answer to that is simple: waddle over to the Outernet Building to catch another immersive display, this time made up of a 360-degree digital display of the penguins at London Zoo.
London Zoo has brought their beloved penguin beach outside of their usual spot in a new way, using the state-of-the-art screens over at the Outernet Building to project an all-encompassing view of the penguins swimming over the heads of people who’ve wandered out of the station.
It marks the first time 360-degree video has been utilised at the space, and will be made alongside stunning soundscape and VR technology to provide a view into the home of the penguins. National Geographic videographer and virtual reality specialist Ignacio Ferrando Margelí took on the task of filing the zoo’s penguin pool, which is the largest in England, and his work can now be viewed at this first-of-its-kind visual experience at the Outernet.
Of course, it’s not the first time the Outernet has welcomed (figurative) animals into their space, with the popular butterfly installation still ever-present on their screens as we speak. The penguins’ run at the space may be short and sweet, but they’ll still be making a splash all the same.
You can check out the London Zoo immersive installation at Outernet now, and it runs for a week from today (July 26). Find it at Now Building, Centre Point, WC2H 8LH (the nearest station is Tottenham Court Road).
