Old Street? No. It’s now known as Fold Street (until this Sunday, anyway), as an army of contorted London landmarks arrive in the city.
Sure – you may just see London’s lamposts, benches, buses and red phone boxes as part of the furniture at this point, but all it takes here is a little twist to make them catch the eye.
Why have they suddenly entered the fold? It’s part of a public art installation for a Samsung Galaxy Z Fold6, and there are few better ways of getting Londoners to pay attention than flipping something they use each day on its head. Perhaps the most striking of the collection, the bus was created by artist Caspar Phillips, and uses recycled material from real London buses to form the accurate scale of a single-decker unit.
The telephone box was created by designer Jem Hughes, and you’ll find it alongside the folded lamppost and bench in Old Street, which has been temporarily renamed ‘Fold Street’ in honour of the weird and wonderful designs.
Since folding phones have made quite the comeback after their heyday in c.2005, maybe the foldable lampost and bench will start rising to prominence? After all, giving you an extra shade from the afternoon sun or cocooning into the corner of the bench may have its perks.
Lowering of the lamposts may also acts as type of spotlight for any photoshoots you wish to partake in with enhanced lighting. You’ll only have a couple of days this time around, but who knows if the emergence of ‘Fold Street’ will catch on?
You can go and see the eye-catching models at Old Street, where they will remain in their contorted state until July 27.
