Egal zu welcher Jahreszeit, bei welchem Wetter oder in welcher Situation, es ist immer ein guter Zeitpunkt, um die Bar mit einem Pint und einer Packung Schweinefleisch zu füllen. Warum also nicht ein bisschen Geschichte in einem der ältesten Pubs Londons erleben?
Es gibt keine endgültige Antwort auf die Frage, welcher Pub der älteste ist – das Einzige, worauf man sich einigen kann, ist, dass Charles Dickens in so ziemlich allen Pubs zu Gast war. Wir sind der Meinung, dass das nicht so wichtig ist, solange sie eine interessante Geschichte zu erzählen haben… Hier sind dreizehn der ältesten Pubs Londons, in denen Sie unbedingt ein Bier trinken sollten. 1. The Guinea, Mayfair
🕒 Aus dem Jahr 1720
Das Gebäude selbst stammt zwar erst aus dem Jahr 1720, aber ein Gasthaus gibt es an dieser Stelle schon seit 1423, was The Guinea einen Platz auf dieser Liste sichert. In jüngerer Zeit ist es für seine Steaks berühmt geworden, die im Guinea Grill serviert werden. Die kosten allerdings eine ganze Stange Geld, also heben Sie sich das Lendensteak vielleicht für das nächste Mal auf. Außerdem gibt es preisgekrönte Pasteten, um Ihren Hunger zu stillen, so dass Sie sicher gut versorgt sind.

2. The Spaniards Inn, Hampstead

Wenn Sie hier einen Drink zu sich nehmen, treten Sie in die Fußstapfen von Literaten wie Keats, Byron und Dickens (wir haben Sie gewarnt, dass er viel herumkam!). Berühmtheit erlangte es auch als angeblicher Geburtsort und bevorzugter Aufenthaltsort des Wegelagerers Dick Turpin. Die saisonalen Menüs sind ein echter Renner, und auch das Tap Takeover des Pubs ist einen Besuch wert, denn hier wird das ganze Jahr über eine Auswahl hervorragender Craft-Biere angeboten.

3. Hoop & Grapes, Aldgate
🕒 s tammt aus dem Jahr 1593
Nicht zu verwechseln mit einem gleichnamigen, etwas jüngeren Pub in Farringdon. Dieses Lokal ist eines der wenigen Holzgebäude, die den großen Brand von 1666 überstanden haben. Angeblich wurden die Flammen nur fünfzig Meter vor der Tür gestoppt, was wir für eine kleine göttliche Intervention halten. Wir hoffen, dass Ihr Pint himmlisch ist! Achten Sie aber auf den Tisch, denn im Laufe der Jahre soll sich der Pub um etwa 18 Zoll zur Seite geneigt haben…

4. Lamm & Flagge, Covent Garden
🕒 Aus dem Jahr 1772
Das Lamb & Flag ist einer der kleineren Veranstaltungsorte auf dieser Liste, hat aber auch eine der blutigeren Geschichten zu bieten. Der Dichter John Dryden wurde an dieser Stelle fast ermordet (allerdings hundert Jahre vor dem Bau des Gebäudes im Jahr 1772), und im 19. Jahrhundert brachten regelmäßige Kämpfe mit bloßen Fäusten in der Gasse dem Lokal einen alternativen Namen ein: „The Bucket of Blood“. Seitdem ist es zum Glück ruhiger geworden.

5. Cittie of Yorke, Holborn
🕒 Aus dem Jahr 1430
Okay, das jetzige Gebäude ist ein Nachbau aus dem Jahr 1920, aber hier steht seit fast sechshundert Jahren ein Pub, also immer noch einer der ältesten Pubs in London. Die Samuel Smith Brewery ist Eigentümerin und Betreiberin dieses Lokals, so dass Sie hier nicht so viel Abwechslung finden werden. Die niedrigeren Preise machen dies jedoch wieder wett, und das Taddy Lagerbier ist ein Publikumsmagnet. Außerdem ist das Lokal absolut geräumig, perfekt für Gruppen oder diejenigen, die sich gerne in der Menge verlieren!

6. The Old Bell Tavern, Fleet Street

Kein anderes Pub auf dieser Liste kann sich eines so beeindruckenden Architekten rühmen wie The Old Bell,das von Sir Christopher Wren für seine Maurer gebaut wurde, die die St. Bride’s Church nach dem lästigen Großen Brand wieder aufbauten. Es ist nicht einmal das einzige Pub, das er gebaut haben soll, denn auch das nahe gelegene Ye Olde Watling (das von derselben Kette betrieben wird) hat einen Platz in seinem Portfolio.

7. Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese, Fleet Street
🕒 s tammt aus dem Jahr 1667
Das Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese ist nicht der richtige Ort, um am Fenster zu sitzen und die Welt an sich vorbeiziehen zu lassen, denn es ist der Pub mit dem besten Namen auf dieser Liste. Es ist eher geeignet, sich in die Hauptrolle eines viktorianischen Krimis zu versetzen, mit Sägespänen auf dem Boden und hölzernen Erkern mit hochlehnigen Kirchenbänken. Wir nehmen unser Pint mit einer Portion Mord und Intrigen, bitte. Man hat wirklich das Gefühl, dass es sich um einen der ältesten Pubs Londons handelt. Der ursprüngliche Pub wurde beim Großen Brand von London zerstört, aber es dauerte nicht lange, bis ein Nachfolger aus der Asche aufstieg (Prioritäten, Leute!). Und wie wäre es mit einem kleinen Stammbaum: Der Pub stammt zwar aus dem Jahr 1667, wurde aber 1667 wieder aufgebaut. Tatsächlich gab es an diesem Ort schon 1538 einen Pub!
Passen Sie nur auf, dass Sie nicht versehentlich in das nicht allzu weit entfernte, ähnlich benannte The Cheshire Cheese gehen. Es ist viel jünger und stammt erst aus dem 20. Jahrhundert – ein wahres Kind im Vergleich!

8. Ye Olde Mitre, Holborn

Aufgrund einer Landfrage gehörte dieser Pub bis ins frühe zwanzigste Jahrhundert technisch gesehen zu Cambridgeshire, so dass Ye Olde Mitre einen etwas zweifelhaften Anspruch darauf erhebt, der älteste Pub Londons zu sein. Dennoch soll Elizabeth I. um den Kirschbaum getanzt haben, der einst vor dem Pub stand. Warum also nicht ihr nacheifern und einen Boogie zu Ihrem Lieblingsbier trinken?

9. The Prospect of Whitby, Wapping

Der älteste Pub Londons am Flussufer bietet einen herrlichen Blick auf die Themse – wir sind uns sicher, dass dies die Seeleute und Schmuggler in den einst als „The Devil’s Tavern“ bekannten Pub gelockt hat. Sie steht seit 1520 und erinnert mit der Schlinge und dem Galgen, die vom Balkon herabhängen, an ihre dunkle Vergangenheit.

10. The Seven Stars, Holborn

Wie viele der ältesten Pubs in London bieten Ihnen die Möglichkeit, sich kostenlos rechtlich beraten zu lassen? Das Seven Stars ist es auf jeden Fall, denn es ist 280 Jahre älter als der benachbarte Royal Courts of Justice und beherbergt auch heute noch zahlreiche Anwälte, wenn der Tag zu Ende geht. Wenn die Nacht anbricht, könnte die Rechtsberatung jedoch bestenfalls zweifelhaft werden…

11. Das George Inn, London Bridge
🕒 s tammt aus dem Jahr 1583
Londons letztes Gasthaus mit Galerie, das in der einen oder anderen Form seit 1583 besteht, hat zahlreiche berühmte Persönlichkeiten empfangen. Shakespeare war ein häufiger Gast, und seine Stücke wurden jahrelang im Innenhof aufgeführt. Ist das ein Beweis dafür, dass es sich um einen der ältesten Pubs Londons handelt?
Der Innenhof ist nach wie vor einer der größten Anziehungspunkte des Pubs, denn hier kann man im Schatten von The Shard einen G&T schlürfen. Der Pub ist außerdem Londons einziger noch erhaltener Gasthof mit Galerie und ist im Besitz des National Trust. Wenn Sie also das nächste Mal ein Bier trinken gehen wollen, sagen Sie einfach, dass Sie auf Entdeckungsreise gehen wollen!

12. The Mayflower, Rotherhithe

Es überrascht nicht, dass dieser Pub seinen Namen von dem berühmten Schiff hat, das nebenan anlegte, bevor es in die Neue Welt segelte. Wenn Sie eine familiäre Verbindung zu einem der Reisenden nachweisen können, sollten Sie sich in das Buch der Mayflower-Nachfahren eintragen. Sie behaupten auch, die besten Fish and Chips in London zu servieren, aber das ist sicher ein Argument für ein anderes Mal.

13. The Grapes, Limehouse
🕒 Aus dem Jahr 1583
Dickens hat hier einen weiteren Auftritt, denn The Grapes ist angeblich der Pub, der im Anfang von Our Mutual Friend beschrieben wird. Es ist ein weiteres unserer ältesten Pubs mit einer dunklen Geschichte, da zwielichtige Hafenarbeiter betrunkene Gäste in der Themse ertränkt haben sollen – etwas, das der jetzige Besitzer, der Schauspieler Ian McKellen, in seiner Geschichte des Lokals beschönigt hat. Montags sollten Sie unbedingt vorbeischauen, denn der Schauspieler ist dafür bekannt, dass er von Zeit zu Zeit das Pub-Quiz leitet!

14. The Jamaica Wine House, Londoner Innenstadt
🕒 Aus dem Jahr 1652 (sozusagen…)
Das Jamaica Wine House ist nicht ganz so alt wie viele andere Gebäude auf dieser Liste. Dennoch spielt es eine wichtige Rolle in der Geschichte Londons: Es ist wohl der Ursprung der Londoner Kaffeekultur. Kaffee? Wein? Bier? Was ist das für ein Ort?! Das Jamaica Wine House war eines der ersten Lokale in London, das Kaffee importierte und servierte. Später, in den späten 1800er Jahren, übernahm ein Pub den Ort und behielt den Namen bei. Im Laufe der Geschichte haben sich hier einige ziemlich unheimliche Dinge zugetragen; der Ort ist voller Geschichten und Mythen gleichermaßen.
Und trotz des Namens ist es eine wunderbare und gemütliche Kneipe. Wenn auch mit einer Weinbar im Keller… Und Kaffee… Oh, okay, vielleicht sind es ja doch alle drei Dinge!
