But sky-high prices and hard-to-get-out-of contracts can often be off-putting especially in January – no wonder many of us decide against it and prefer to go running or cycling in the great outdoors instead. Luckily for us, London isn’t all about exclusive, members-only gyms for the rich and famous. Below follows our pick of some of the best cheap gym memberships in London for 2022 – some even have free trials and most have no joining fees! Win, win.
1. The Gym
This chain has been a firm fave of this author since he arrived in London way back in 2013 – and for good reason. It’s open round-the-clock, offers monthly memberships from just £19.99 (and even less elsewhere in the country), and has free classes available with personal trainers including abs blast, legs, bums and tums and body conditioning to boot. London itself currently has 60 different locations – with more planned to open in the near future – and the chain are currently offering a no joining fee offer with 50% off your first month’s membership at selected gyms. What better reason to channel your inner Rocky Balboa than that, hey?!
Another 24-hour gym here, PureGym gives you the chance to choose from 68 different gyms in London to get your workout on. They’re currently also offering a no joining fee at selected gyms, and some of the London chains offer memberships of just £25 per month with no contract – meaning you can leave or freeze your account any time you like. Students currently get 10% off their first six months, and 30% off if they choose a fixed-term membership package – we always look after our students in this city. Alongside friendly personal trainers, there’s also various different classes available and an app that gives you access to over 600 workouts and personalised training plans.
3. easyGym Camberwell
If you’re living south of the river and close to SE5, then this is probably one of the best cheap gym memberships for you. Situated just off Camberwell Green, this friendly spot offers flexible memberships, quality kit, free inductions and a range of different motivational group classes and workouts. Like its namesake airline, this is a no-frills spot – but you can’t argue with the prices. They’re currently offering a week’s trial for just a quid – yep, you read that right – and a one-day pass is just £9.99 for the whole day. Other membership options include off-peak – which means you can use the gym from 9pm–5am for just £14.99 – and regular passes are under £30 with zero joining fees. For those living further out, there are also gyms in Slough and Basildon.
With three London locations – in Southwark, Cambridge Heath and Canning Town – this budget-friendly spot is a great option if you’re looking for one of the capital’s best cheap gym memberships. Suitable for both beginners and for those who already know the ropes, Fitness4Less offers friendly, knowledgable staff, quality equipment and a range of different classes – including boxhiit, MMA fitness, indoor cycling and even flow and restore yoga. They also have various different memberships, ranging from weekend passes (at a cost of around £18) and day passes (at a cost of £12) to flexible monthly passes (at a cost of £29.99). As with the gyms mentioned above, you can also currently join without paying a joining fee – win, win!
5. Fitness First
Slightly more expensive than the other gyms mentioned so far on this list, Fitness First is still nevertheless a great option if you’re looking to join a new gym. They offer a whole host of different classes in their 35 London gyms – with everything from Zumba and body attack spin to tai chi, pilates and spinning. As well as their extensive selection of classes, this beloved chain offers state-of-the-art-equipment, with plenty of cross-trainers, assault bikes, rowers, steppers and treadmills in their cardio zone, as well as free-weights with dumbbells, barbells and various benches in their strength-training area. Some gyms even come with pools, steam rooms and saunas, and there are always loads of PTs on hand to help you out if you need it. Though memberships are around £49+ per month, the best part is that you’ll have access to multiple gyms. They’re also currently offering the first month for free.
Founded in Bethnal Green back in 1988 by bodybuilder Savvas Kyriacou, Muscleworks does exactly what it says on the tin. Budding bodybuilders listen up – this is one of London’s best cheap gym memberships. This is the place to come if you’re looking to work on your strength training, and there are twelve different personal trainers on hand to give you all the help you need if this is the box you’re looking to tick. There’s a real sense of camaraderie here, and the Bethnal Green spot is open 24/7, seven days a week with memberships amounting to just £29 per month. There’s another gym which is located just ten minutes’ walk from Stoke Newington station, and sports training, nutrition bars and sun beds can be found at both branches.
7. Boom Cycle
For those of you that struggle with motivation and think that the idea of fighting over gym equipment is hell on earth, then look no further than Boom Cycle. Less gym and more full-on party, the team here are all about putting the fun factor into getting your sweat on. With pumping music, bright, flashing lights and sometimes even confetti (yep, really), this is London’s ultimate ‘party on a bike’ experience. Friendly instructors will be on hand to guide, encourage and push you to meet your desired goals whatever they may be, and there are five different studios you can choose from in Holborn, Waterloo, Battersea, Hammersmith and Monument. There are a whole different range of memberships available – prices are usually £20 per ride, but they’re currently running an introductory offer of three rides for just £35. Time to get your spin on like Kylie…
8. Better Health
Established in 1993 under the consumer-brand name ‘Better‘, Greenwich Leisure Ltd (or GLL as they are otherwise known) are a non-profit charitable organisation working in partnership with over 250 sports and leisure facilities. Originally based in the Royal Borough of Greenwich, they have now expanded across the whole of London and beyond, working with local leisure centres, gyms and swimming pools to provide cheap gym memberships for people wanting to improve their fitness. Memberships start at around 35 quid per month – if you pay around £60, you’ll get access to gyms, pools, health suites, various fitness classes and even tennis and racquet courses. The best thing about this one is that you can choose the leisure centre closest to you – so no excuses, right?! You can also cancel anytime you want if you are needing to save some pennies down the line.
This one’s a real gem if you’re more into your fitness classes, and would rather do a HIIT workout or go spinning than pump iron by yourself at the gym. Founded back in 2013, ClassPass’ mission was to revolutionise the fitness and wellness industry by bringing together ‘the world’s best classes and experiences into one app‘. Top partners based in London include ‘1Rebel’, ‘Core Collective’, ‘BLOK’, ‘Barry’s’ and ‘Yogarise’ (among with many, many more), and prices range from £35 for 25 credits up to £149 for 125 credits. You can even use your credits on spas, salons and studios if you’re looking for more of a pamper – and let’s face it we need all of that we can get in January. The best thing is that they’re doing a month of FREE credits for January (yep, really), so you’d better get a squirrel on as this won’t last long.
10. Anytime Fitness
