You might have noticed that there have been some disruptions throughout summer and into September on the Piccadilly Line. While usually that might cause a bit of annoyance for your travel plans, many Londoners have been pretty understanding about the whole thing becuase there is a pretty great light at the end of the tunnel, pardon the pun.
The closures on the line are so that Transport for London can prepare for the arrival of a fleet of 94 state-of-the-art trains, but when exactly will passengers be able to take a ride on these fancy new trains? We’ve got all the details.
When can passengers ride on the new Piccadilly Line trains?
Transport for London is aiming to introduce the new fleet of trains between December 2026 and June 2027, so we don’t have to wait long before we’re riding in luxury along the Piccadilly Line.
The new trains will boast a host of upgrades including: walk-through carriages, wide double doors on all carriages, enhanced digital displays, improved step-free access, on-train CCTV cameras and the real star of the show, air conditioning.
After the record-breakingly hot summer we’ve experienced this year, the addition of more air-conditioned trains on the tube network will be welcomed with open arms. It’s the first time a deep Tube train will have this amenity.
Piccadilly Line upgrade and disruptions
Aside from enjoying all the new comforts on the brand-new trains, their introdiction will also ensure that trains are more frequent, increasing from 24 trains an hour to 27 at peak times, meaning you’ll only have to wait 135-seconds between services. That’s pretty darn swift.
Piccadilly Line trains already account for 10% of all tube journeys, so that’s a lot of people who will benefit from all these changes.
It’s worth bearing in mind that before we can start to revel in the boujeeness of it all, there will be some further disruptions so it’s worth making a note of those before any upcoming journey.
Luckily for you, you can always rely on Secret London for all the latest updates, so we’ve put together this handy guide for all upcoming closures.
