Now that temperatures have taken a nosedive and with the clocks going back this weekend, it’s starting to feel like winter is just around the corner. But it’s not all doom and gloom, as we hurtle towards the end of the year, we’ve got a lot of festive fun to look forward to.
And it doesn’t get more festive than Covent Garden in December. This year the magical daily snowfall returns to the iconic piazza.
Snowfall on the piazza
With the rain already paying the capital a visit, it’s got many people wondering if we’re going to have a white Christmas. While there’s no guarantee of that, from 4 December if you’re passing through Covent Garden, you’ll be able to experience daily snowfall flurries every hour, on the hour, from midday until 9pm.
It’ll take place right next to the legendary Covent Garden Christmas tree. That’s a whole lot of Christmas spirit concentrated in one place, enough to melt even the most Scrooge-like Londoners.
Theatre of Christmas at Covent Garden
The daily snowfall in the heart of the city is part of a wider programme of festive cheer starting from 12 November.
Covent Garden are calling this the seven-week festive programme “The Theatre of Christmas” to celebrate the area’s history of theatre and performance, with it being a hotspot for street performers as well as being home to The Royal Opera and The Royal Ballet.
The other Christmassy bits on offer will be:
- The Forest of Theatre is made for muscial theatre lovers. It is a new installation featuring Christmas trees inspired by West End shows including MAMMA MIA!, SIX and Moulin Rouge! The Musical.
- As is tradition, Christmas decorations will adorn Covent Garden including a 50 foot Christmas tree, giant bells, baubles and over 300,000 sparkling lights.
- Surprise performances from West End performers on Festive Thursdays.
