London’s pioneering Piccadilly Line is mere months away from receiving a rather gargantuan glow-up. A fleet of 94 state-of-the-art trains will be chugging into passenger service over the next 10 months – and in preparation for these swanky new trains hitting the track, Transport for London has announced a number of closures taking place on the dark blue line over the next few months. But knowledge is power, and all that – so we’re here to clue you up on the closures so that you don’t get caught out.
When will the Piccadilly Line be closed this month?
There will be fairly significant closures taking place across the Piccadilly Line this month. From September 19 through to September 20 (including the night tube on the evening of September 18), there will be no service between Hyde Park Corner and Acton Town. And on the weekend of September 26 and 27 (including the night tube on the evening of September 25), almost the entire line will be closed. There will be no services running between Cockfosters and Uxbridge on this weekend, meaning that the entire central London stretch of the line will be out of action. There will still be services running between Acton Town and Heathrow Airport, and all other lines are set to be running smoothly, too.
The Piccadilly Line upgrade
Over £3 billion has been invested into this highly-anticipated upgrade. The revamp will see the fleet of new trains enter service between December 2026 and June 2027. The nifty new trains will boast walk-through carriages, wider doors, enhanced digital displays, and improved step-free access. Most excitingly, the carriages will be decked out with air-conditioning, making the Piccadilly Line the very first deep-level tube line to be air-conditioned.
The upcoming closures come as part of the upgrade preparation as the tracks need to be upgraded, new CCTV needs to be installed, and signals need to be modified. There will also be some routine maintenance taking place during the line closures.
Upcoming Piccadilly Line closures
Intermittent closures will affect the Piccadilly Line whilst TfL prepares for the new-and-improved trains. The currently confirmed closures are as follows:
- September 18 (Night Tube) – no service between Hyde Park Corner and Northfields
- September 19-20 – no service between Hyde Park Corner and Acton Town
- September 25 (Night Tube) – no service between Cockfosters and Acton Town
- September 26-27 – no service between Cockfosters and Uxbridge
- October 16 (Night Tube) – no service between Hammersmith and Heathrow and Uxbridge
- October 17-18 – no service between Hammersmith and Heathrow and Uxbridge
- October 28-30 – no service between Cockfosters and Uxbridge
- October 30 (Night Tube) – no service on the entire line
- October 31-November 1 – no service on the entire line
- November 20 (Night Tube) – no service between Hammersmith and Heathrow and Uxbridge
- November 21-22 – no service between Hammersmith and Heathrow and Uxbridge
