The London Underground’s pioneering Piccadilly Line will turn 120 years old later this year, having been ferrying folk between west and north London since December 15, 1906. And whilst our distinguished dark blue line already boasts a rather lengthy list of accolades, the newest one to add to the record is certainly going to be the coolest of all.
Transport for London has invested over £3 billion into the upgrade of the Piccadilly Line. The revamp will see 94 shiny new trains hit the track, each of which will be decked out with air conditioning. This means that the Piccadilly Line will be the London Underground’s very first deep-level tube line to boast lovely, cool carriages. And I, for one, am very excited about it.
Now, I wouldn’t chuck your hand-held fans away just yet, folks. The new fleet of trains isn’t set to come into full operation until June 2027, but Londoners will start to see the new trains being introduced from December 2026. Once the 94 new trains replace the existing 86 trains, services will increase from 24 to 27 trains per hour. And during the busiest times, there will be a Piccadilly Line service every 135 seconds.
The new state-of-the-art trains will also boast walk-through carriages, wider double doors (to ease congestion), enhanced digital displays, and improved step-free access. The new trains have been designed with sustainability in mind, and are set to reduce energy consumption by 20% and support decarbonisation. With the Piccadilly Line currently accounting for more than 10% of all London tube journeys, it’s safe to say that these improvements will be welcomed with open arms.
