The beloved Fitzrovia Chapel has become synonymous with London’s arts and culture scene, continuously putting on fantastic exhibitions inside the historic space. The newest addition to their line-up of events is The Witch Burns, an all-new exhibition delving into the intertwined worlds of witchcraft and womanhood.
For a limited time this month, make your way to bustling Fitzrovia to witness the nineteenth-century chapel like never before, with contemporary artworks completely transforming the space into an exploration of witchcraft, womanhood, feminism and satire.
Curated by TIN MAN ART, the exhibition displays several artists such as Sara Berman, Radiohead & Chris Hopewell, Malene Hartmann-Rasmussen, and more. Each work will delve deep into our continuous fascination and obsession with witches, female power and proto-religious imagery.
There’s even an all-new work by Sue Webster, that will also be shown for the first time at this immersive exhibition. The artist is known for her previous abstract shadow sculptures that she made with her artistic partner Tim Noble.
For many, witches and witchcraft have long been associated with evil and persecution. However, the counterview has continuously been evolving and growing since its foundations also, associating the practice with feminine resistance and power.
This exhibition plans to break down these notions and redefine them through different artworks, such as ceramic cauldrons, fantastical animalistic sculptures, stunning self-portraits, plus so much more.
The exhibition is on display at Fitzrovia Chapel from Tuesday 2nd – Friday 12th July 2024. The stunning chapel is a Grade II-listed, Gothic-revival building, originally built as a place for reflection and contemplation for staff and patients at the former Middlesex Hospital.
In the last decade, following an extensive restoration, it has become a cornerstone for culture, not only in Fitzrovia but the entirety of London, with this exhibition shining a spotlight on its historical significance and contemporary flair.
You can find Fitzrovia Chapel at 2 Pearson Square, Fitzrovia, London W1T 3BF. For more information on this exhibition, and to stay up to date with all their events, visit their website here.
