A Wetherspoons pub is as synonymous with Britain as bad weather, inflation, and suggesting a ‘nice cup of tea’ as a cure to literally anything. They’re anywhere and everywhere. And so it will probably come as no surprise to you that the bigwigs of the beer world are back at it, and gearing up to open a shiny new boozer in the heart of the capital city.
The new-spoons-on-the-block, however, won’t be like any we’ve seen before – because this time, they’re going down under. No, not to Australia; down to an abandoned underground station near Euston. Who’d have thought it?
Now look, I know Wetherspoons isn’t everyone’s cup of tea purple rain, but we must admit that there’s something refreshingly comforting about the cheap and cheerfulness of a good old Spoons. Especially when the current price of a pint in most London pubs resembles that of a small mortgage.
On the subject of mortgages, it’s not yet be confirmed how much the renovation will cost – but it’s rumoured to have quite a hefty pricetag. No wonder they had to raise the price of their classic beer and burger deal from £5.99 to £8.55, hey?
When can we expect the new pub to open?
Building works have not yet started, but we’ll of course keep you posted when we know more. The wheels are apparently already in motion, though, and the new subterranean venue is set to be open in time for Christmas party season. Great news considering that ale we want for Christmas is Spoons.
Speaking today (April 1), a J D Wetherspoon spokesperson, Joe King, said: “We are so excited start transforming the derelict station. After 50 years of being out of action, we can’t wait to inject it with that incomparable Wetherspoons buzz that we all know and love. Mind the gap, everyone!”
