Sure, John Monatgu, the 4th Earl of Sandwich, might get all the credit for his creation, but you know who doesn’t get enough recognition? That innovative genius–the nerve, the invention!–who decided to throw rules out of the window and add crisps to the bog-standard sandwich.
For one week only, the ‘Walkers Sandwich Shops’ will be popping up across the country to coincide with British Sandwich Week, and launch the #CrispIn or #CrispOut debate by the crisps giant.
Walkers have undertaken stringent research and found that 98% of adults in Britain believe that a sandwich is completely enhanced by the addition of crisps – but the group who prefer them on the side (34%) as opposed to inside the sandwich (27%) just edged it in their figures, hence the beginning of this friendly debate.
From June 12, Walkers will partner with various sandwich shops in London, Glasgow, Liverpool and Brighton, ushering people in to try some unusual crisp and sarnie combinations.
In London, Max’s Sandwich Shop in Crouch Hill will partner with a showstopping menu planned. I’ve never thought to add this crisp to my sandwich, but the ‘Mighty Monster Muncher’, created by owner Max Halley and filled with fish fingers, Monster Munch, cabbage, chipotle mayonnaise and Pico De Gallo on fresh Foccaciamight just be swiveling that on its head.
There’s no need to be half-baked on this one: let it be known whether you prefer crisps in or out of the sandwich and try a brand new combination at the Walkers Sandwich Shop from June 12.
Philippa Pennington from Walkers said: “We believe that a bag of Walkers makes your lunchtime sandwich even more enjoyable, but it’s very clear to us that people feel very strongly about whether or not the crisps should be eaten in their sandwich or on the side.
“Last year the residents of Sandwich voted ‘Crisp In’ as the winning combination, but this year we’re widening the debate to showcase the wide range of crisp and sandwich combinations – from classic Walkers crisps through to Wotsits and Monster Munch!
“With Walkers Sandwich Shops located across the UK, we’re calling on people to head to their nearest shop, taste the sandwiches and have their say online by sharing their favourite combination from the menu, or favourite crisps to enjoy in a sandwich – whether that’s Wotsits, Monster Munch, Quavers, or classic Walkers!”
