A rooftop bar with those iconic Shoreditch trains for company? Village Underground, you’ve done it again.
For its 20th birthday celebrations, the legendary East London space is expanding into its skyline, opening up a rooftop terrace in the middle of summer, where frequenters will be able to poke around the trains on top of the building. You know, the ones you always wonder how they got there as you walk through Shoreditch or pass by on the Overground.

Once you make it up the stairs, you’ll be able to marvel at and poke around the trains that you probably didn’t expect to ever get that close to. And after that, as Super Hans envisages customers will when they see their pub’s washing machine centrepiece in that Peep Show episode, you’ll exclaim ‘I need a drink’.
Once you’ve quenched your thirst with a draught beer or a glass from their curated wine selection, grab a bit from Bad Boy Pizza Society, who have been confirmed as the venue’s food partner. BBPS won the National Pizza Of The Year Award and recently opened their permanent restaurant in Bethnal Green, so it caps off a big year for them, too.

Village Underground’s rooftop space opens to the public on Friday, July 3, with the design by MOBO works set to be finished in time to enjoy a beautiful chunk of summer. Once open, it will welcome crowds from Wednesday to Sunday every week.
For a venue that already hosts some of the most interesting music nights out there in the capital in its Victorian space, this is just another string to its bow that suitably lands after its 20th year.
Speaking on the news, Auro Foxcroft, Founder / CEO of Village Underground says, “For nearly 20 years, we’ve had this suntrap spot on the Shoreditch skyline to ourselves, so it’s exciting to finally be able to share it with our audiences and the local community. The train carriages have been part of how we’ve used the space day to day – from working to interviewing artists – and this feels like the natural next step, opening them up and making them part of the space for everyone to enjoy.”
