Vaisakhi, otherwise known as Baisakhi or Basoa, is an annual springtime festival celebrated within Sikhism with roots in northern India. The festival honours the religion’s foundations and more specifically, the time when Khalsa (modern-day Sikhism) was born back in 1699.
The harvest festival has been an integral part of Punjab communities for generations, eventually becoming a sacred time and holiday for all Sikhs, with worship ceremonies, parades, and celebrations all set to take over cities and towns across the globe, and that of course includes London.

The capital’s Vaisakhi celebrations are all set to take place in Trafalgar Square next weekend on Saturday, April 19, and it’s set to a beautiful celebration.
The annual festival and celebrations shine a spotlight on both Sikh and Punjabi traditions, heritage, and cultures, with a dazzling array of entertainment prepared for the big day. The full programme of events hasn’t been confirmed for this year just yet, but if last year is anything to go by then we can expect Kirtan performances, as well as Gatka demonstrations, a Sikh Martial Art with drumming and mind-bending stick-fighting.
Last year also featured even more fun and exciting activities like turban tying, film screenings, and art displays by Sikh artists. Free vegetarian treats and traditional Indian tea were also available throughout the afternoon, promoting the Sikh concept of Langar which provides free meals for all. Kids won’t feel left out either, as there will be a children’s marquee with free activities on offer so everyone feels included.
You don’t want to miss out on this free family event organised by the Mayor of London and supported by the Vaisakhi Community Advisory Group. It will be taking place in Trafalgar Square on Saturday, April 19 from noon until 6 pm. You can find out more about the event here.
