Love a market? Of course you do, you’re a Secret London reader. And if there’s a few things we know about Secret London readers, it’s that you all love great food, incredible bars, and checking out London’s best markets. Just like we do. Oh, and trains. Y’all love trains. Well, let us put an upcoming event on your radar, as we tell you all about The Big Market.
Hitting Peckham Levels later this month, on November 26-27, The Big Market is set to be one of those brilliant one-stop-shop destinations where you’ll find virtually anything for anyone. Organized by Owain Jones, who also owns Cigarette Records, a record shop in Catford, The Big Market has plants, pickles, posters, clothes, ceramics, food, records, vintage, and everything in between. Basically, if you’re searching for a gift for someone, and you can’t find something here, you might as well just give up! It’s basically the perfect place to make a jump-start on that Christmas shopping you’ve been putting off.
What is The Big Market? (And how big is it, really?)
First popping up back in May, with a measly 40 traders, The Big Market originally attracted over 3,000 shoppers. And in the months since, it has grown with awareness, consideration, and particular attention to curation. There’s a focus on making the market more eco conscious and ethical. In support of that, the market prioritizes 2nd hand products, reusable items, and businesses using recycled or upcycled materials.
With over 120 traders across the two days, it’s hard to overstate how diverse the offerings at The Big Market will be. And it’s made all the more exciting by the fact that both days will see different traders selling their wares. From niche products to those with mass appeal, just wandering around the market is a joy in itself. Keep your eyes out, in particular for Room12a and their selection of vintage posters, collectibles, and homeware goods, as well as Inspired In Brockley’s colourful and funky handmade jewellery. Me On The Map’s typographic London street and borough maps are also sure to be a hit. I for one can’t wait to get my nose right up inside one of Brûler’s delicious sounding soy candles! And you know organizer Owain will be bringing plenty of heat from Cigarette Records.
It’s not just about shopping, though, as there will also be food and drink traders scattered around as well. Got to keep the strength up to carry all the shopping back home after all! You better believe you won’t be leaving empty handed, no matter what you tell yourself on the way there.
The Big Market will run from 12 PM until 5 PM each day, and is absolutely free to get in. Regardless of if you’re looking ahead to the festive season, buying a birthday present for a friend, or browsing for yourself (or all of the above) they have you sorted. Head to their socials to get a closer look at some of the traders who’ll be there on the day, and find out more about the event.
