A picnic on the South Bank? The BBQ Club is making it possible.
With the false spring behind us, we’re moving tantalisingly towards summer pop-ups season. And here’s your first exciting spot to put in the diary: The BBQ Club will return to the South Bank on May 3rd. Whilst the food from Jimmy Garcia (perhaps the most hard-working man in the pop-up game) looks pretty gorgeous, we’re most excited about the Patch & Picnic feature; a series of grass spaces along the riverbank that are just perfectly for a relaxing summer afternoon.
Essentially, The BBQ Club have gone a bit mad at B&Q, and have plans to build a giant deck along the South Bank. White picket fences will surround private areas, complete with a lawn, parasol, deckchairs, and beanbags – no doubt bringing solace to those Londoners deprived of the luxury of a garden.
The lawns come equipped with essential summer games: croquet, giant Jenga, and mini golf, so you can add a competitive aspect to your riverside sojourn. The BBQ Club can also provide hampers stuffed full of alfresco goodies, or you’re welcome to bring along your own picnic, tailored especially for your needs.
Mind you, if you’re looking for something truly delicious, then The BBQ Club’s riverside grillhouse is a promising option. You can join them for a seven-course tasting menu, featuring the likes of maple-smoked trout, lamb ribs, spiced roast cauliflower, and halloumi and red pepper skewers, all flame-grilled for your pleasure.
The BBQ Club will also boast a walk-up BBQ Bar, where you can grab halloumi burgers and harissa chicken thighs to go. Meanwhile, the pop-up will welcome guest chefs for one-night stints, aiming to show off a different style of barbecue each time. Happily, there’s also an in-house bar – useful, since no sunlit afternoon on the Thames is complete without a cold drink in hand!
You’ll find The BBQ Club outside the Southbank Centre, from May 3rd. Spaces for Patch & Picnic and the dinners are available to reserve now – find them here.
