What do you do when your heart wants a holiday, but your head knows that neither your bank account or annual leave allowance can afford one? Well, my friends, let me tell you. You find a sunny(ish) spot near the city that serves up enough holiday vibes to make you forget that you haven’t actually left the country. And guess what? We’ve found just the place. You can thank us later.
Nestled away at the end of the Elizabeth line is Thames Lido. Visitors have been splashing about in this Grade II listed alfresco swimming pool since it was first built back in 1903. It originally opened as a ladies-only pool and is thought to be the oldest surviving outdoor municipal pool. Pretty swim-pressive, right?
Swimming at Thames Lido
The Edwardian lido underwent a fairly hefty refurb back in 2017, when many of its original features were restored. The 25-metre pool is kept at a refreshing 24-26 degrees, making it the perfect spot for a summery splash about.
Thames lido also boasts a sauna, steam room and hot tub – because no (pretend) holiday is complete without some rest and relaxation. The lido has some delightful deals running throughout the summer. For example, you can enjoy two hours access to the spa facilities, a one-hour massage treatment and a delicious meal for just £85 per person. Or you can enjoy a Sunday Swim & Tapas for just £40. Count me in!
Eating and drinking
Speaking of delicious meals, there’s plenty of food and drink on offer for you to refuel and rehydrate in between lengths. The whole place oozes Spanish and Mediterranean vibes, and the ever-changing menu is no different.
The 100-cover restaurant comes complete with an open kitchen, wood-burning oven and charcoal grill; serving up delectable dishes and tasty tapas, made with fresh and seasonal produce. There’s also a poolside bar where guests can sip, snack and soak up the atmosphere.
Now, we can’t guarantee that the weather will align with our holiday spirit, because – well – this is the UK, after all. But it does seem as though the sun has finally read the room. And if we all stay really quiet, it might not notice us and stick around for longer than two hours. Wishful thinking, I know.
