Whilst I would personally love to be on holiday at – quite literally – all times, my bank account and my boss strangely don’t seem as keen on the idea (strange, right?). And so I’ve become pretty adept at scoping out places that serve up vacation vibes in spades – making me forget that I haven’t actually hopped on a plane and landed somewhere in the middle of the Mediterranean. One such spot is picturesquely perched at the end of the Elizabeth Line and comes in the form of Thames Lido.
Thames Lido
Dating back to the Edwardian era, Thames Lido is thought to to be one of the oldest surviving outdoor pools in the country. Visitors have been splashing about in the Grade II listed lido since it first set up shop back in 1903 as a ladies-only swimming bath. Thames Lido closed to the public back in the 70s and didn’t reopen until 2017, following a hefty refurb. Alongside the restoration of many of the site’s original features, the rather gargantuan glow-up also saw the arrival of spa facilities and a picture-perfect poolside restaurant. And nowadays, they can all be enjoyed year-round by members and non-members alike. So, grab your goggles and your swimming cozzies, Londoners, and listen up.
The 25-metre pool is kept at a refreshing 23-25 degrees, making it the perfect spot for a summery splash about. There’s a sauna, a steam room, a hot tub, and a cold-water drench bucket for those that are far braver than I am. No pretend holiday is complete without some rest and relaxation, so visitors can also book in for a dreamy massage if they really want to to treat themselves.
Thames Lido also boasts an impressive food and drink offering, so you can stay well-fed and well-hydrated in between your lengths (or your lying down). The 100-cover restaurant comes complete with an open kitchen, wood-burning oven, and charcoal grill – and serves up a scrumptious array of delicious dishes and tasty tapas. There’s also a poolside bar on hand, so guests can sip, snack, swim, and soak up the atmosphere.

Getting to Thames Lido from London
You’ll find Thames Lido on Napier Road, RG1 8FR which is roughly a 90 minute drive from London, and there is on-site parking available. Non-drivers can hop on the trusty Elizabeth Line to Reading – Thames Lido is then just a 10 minute walk from there.
