New Year’s Eve is a night for celebration and frivolousness, and this is largely helped by the Tube running all night on the night to ensure we can head wherever the evening takes us (and home safely to bed) with ease.
In the past, this has been made even better with TfL traditionally also making travel free – but this won’t be the case on New Year’s Eve 2024. TfL confirmed that they are unable to offer free travel on the night, which will now have been the case for the past five years.
There has been no free travel on New Year’s Eve since 2020, which wasn’t such an eventful year in terms of the festivities anyway. Will free travel on the last day of the year ever return? That remains to be seen, but we can all still hold out hope for 2026!
Despite the having-to-pay-for-it part, there is still an essential service running on NYE, which facilitates our plans and gets us to the party and home to bed. Services on the Tube run all night (barring the Waterloo and City line and the District line to Kensington Olympia), and there are special services on some Overground lines and the Elizabeth line (though keep an eye out for some delays due to a planned strike). Buses and trams will also be available to catch all night.
Of course, be sure to plan your journey ahead of time and ensure each service is running on the day of travel to be certain of not running into travel woes on your to and from your end of 2024 celebrations.
