Elizabeth Line workers are set to walk out on New Year’s Eve, one of the busiest times of the year for train services. If this goes ahead, it will see members of the RMT union who work on the line strike for 24 hours from 9pm on December 31 – prime time for those using the line to travel to celebratory events for the end of the year.
Why is the strike on the Elizabeth line taking place?
The strike is specifically taking place for those who work in the control room, and it is over a pay dispute. Control room staff will not start work if their shift begins between 9pm on December 31 and 9pm on January 1, 2025.
Speaking on the news, RMT General Secretary Mick Lynch said: “Our members play a vital role in running the Elizabeth Line and their demands for fair treatment on working hours and leave remain unmet. The current offer falls short, and our members are determined to secure a fair deal.”
Members of the RMT will also be refusing to work on rest days or work overtime between December 5-18.

Will there be any Elizabeth Line trains on New Year’s Eve?
TfL has said that if the strike goes ahead, there will still be trains, but passengers can expect delays to travel on the network, with the service busier than usual.
A spokesperson for TfL said: “We encourage the RMT and MTR (the company operating the Elizabeth line) to find a solution to this dispute.”
