When considering the highest flyers on the UK’s airport scene; Heathrow and Gatwick are the two that are most likely spring to mind, right? But it seems as though another airport has decided to throw its hat in the ring. London Stansted Airport has just been given the green light to drastically increase the number of passengers it can welcome each year, and it could soon give Gatwick a bit of a run(way) for its money.
Stansted currently holds the title of being the fourth busiest airport in the UK, but it’s in the process of a rather hefty transformation that will see its passenger numbers soar. The £1.1 billion upgrade was confirmed back in 2023, and the exact plans that the airport had in mind were confirmed in 2024. But now, in 2025, the final piece of the puzzle has been slotted into place, as Stansted has just been given the green light from the local council.
London Stansted Airport expansion plans
Despite the expansion plans having been given the go ahead a while back, a limit on passenger numbers at Stansted had still remained in place due to the airport’s agreement with Uttlesford District Council. The technically-not-in-London travel hub has had a maximum passenger capacity of 41 million, but this week, permission was granted for that passenger number to be upped to 51 million over the next 20 years.

Stansted previously confirmed that the expansion wouldn’t involve the construction of an additional runway or terminal. The plans also don’t involve exceeding the current limit of 274,000 flights a year. Instead, the aviation-aficionados plan to make better use of its existing and underutilised resources, and ensure that its current runway (and the number of yearly flights that are allowed to take off from it) is being used to its full potential.
London Stansted Airport currently sees around 30 million passengers pass through its doors each year. So, the newly-granted permission could see the passenger numbers almost double over the next two decades. However, there is still one more hoop left to jump fly through before the wheels can fully be set in motion. Before the passenger increase is officially signed off, Stansted Airport needs to sign the ‘S106 agreement’ (a commitment to funding community improvements). The agreement includes support for local bus services and improvements being made to the nearby M11 to ensure it can handle the extra congestion that will come with the passenger increase at the airport.
If all goes to plan, Stansted could reach 51 annual passengers in the next 20 years. And when it does, it could surpass Gatwick Airport as the second busiest airport in the country. Stansted has previously pledged that it will grow in the most sustainable and responsible way possible. The expansion is set to create around 4,500 new jobs, alongside various educational and training opportunities.
