It’s a fun fact about London that can come as a shock to many visitors: it’s a city absolutely full to the brim with parks and green spaces. Sure, there’s the iconic Hyde Park, slap bang in the middle, but there’s also the likes of Finsbury Park, Victoria Park, the Hackney Marshes, Richmond Park, and much, much more. In fact, there are whole walking routes through the city, which ‘chain’ together some of the city’s prettiest green spots. (Such as South East London’s Green Chain Walk.)
As such, it can be easy for a gorgeous garden to become an overlooked gem, or an IYKYK local spot. One such example, the Coombe Wood Gardens, is a local favourite that’s hidden away from prying eyes over in Croydon, in South London.
Coombe Wood Gardens
It’s easy to see why Coombe Wood Gardens might not register for Londoners living outside of Croydon. After all, it does pretty much require a trip on the tram to visit. But it’s well worth the journey. And for Croydon locals, it’s a must-visit.
The gardens were once part of Coombe Wood House – a private property that was built in the late 1800s. However, Croydon Council bought the area to convert it into a public use space. The gardens were then opened to the public in 1948.
Altogether, the gardens encompass just over 14 acres. Within it, you’ll find a charming waterfall, rock gardens, seasonal ornamental gardens, and a large woodland area. Pathways weave themselves around the Coombe Wood Gardens, making for a lovely nature stroll.
It makes for a gorgeous spot to visit all year round. In the spring, the gardens are “ablaze with colourful rhododendrons and azalea”, while summer fills them with a “colourful display of herbaceous planting.” Come autumn, you’ll spot “striking grasses and bold foliage… against a backdrop of autumn colour.” And in the winter, the gardens “are alive with colourful heathers”.
And don’t forget the cafe! Housed within the old stable block, you’ll find a charming local spot for a coffee, some cake, or a bite to eat.

Psst… Here’s a top tip: the cafe attached to Coombe Wood Gardens rents out frisbees for disc golf. And there’s a disc golf course just a short walk away in Lloyd Park.
