I’ll see your regular basketball court and raise it – well – into the sky. That’s right, the capital city‘s very first rooftop basketball court has landed in (well, on) London’s Design District – because everything is more fun on a rooftop, right?
Offering a slam-dunking experience like no other, the sky-high court is located on top of one of the sixteen buildings that make up the Design District neighbourhood in Greenwich Peninsula; London’s first purpose built home for creative industries.
Just a stones throw away from North Greenwich station, the court occupies an enviable position and boasts unrivaled views of the o2, the peninsula, the Thames, and Canary Wharf. Good luck keeping your head in the game when you’re surrounded by gorgeous things to gaze at.
The court is open-air and open to all, with bookings available to be made via the Design District website. Public bookings can be made between 6pm-8pm on weekdays and 8am-8pm on weekends and bank holidays at a price of £30 per hour. The lucky lot that are part of the Design District community not only get extended hours, but they also get a discounted price of £15 per hour. Not bad, hey?
To launch the rooftop court, Design District has partnered with the UK’s premier basketball club; the London Lions. An event will be hosted by NBA star, O.G. Anunoby (the first ever British basketball player to win an NBA championship), with other Lions players and coaches attending to provide aspiring young basketball enthusiasts with some top-tier coaching.
Jerome Quartey, Marketing Director of London Lions said: “As a London-based basketball team, we value creativity highly and place it at the heart of everything we do – both on and off the court. We’re delighted to partner with Design District to raise awareness of this awesome space, which boasts a unique rooftop basketball court and a central hub for the creative economies to thrive. The court is extremely convenient for the community, so everyone of all ages and backgrounds can enjoy what it has to offer.”
In addition to hosting a range of sports and wellness activities; the space is also available to hire for everything from outdoor screenings to photoshoots. The ball is well and truly in your court and I hoop to see you there. Okay, I’ll stop now.
