New trains? Oh TfL, you really shouldn’t have!

Actually no, you really should have, because those old trains are pretty dire. All our Christmases have come true though, because TfL have sprung for swish new trains to run on the Piccadilly line. They’ve coughed up £1.5 billion for 94 new trains, and here’s what all that cash has got them…

Yep, these are set to be the fanciest way to get from Bounds Green to Arnos Vale when they arrive. Which won’t actually be until 2023, but we can dream until then. The headline news is that this lot are FULLY AIR CONDITIONED. No more melting in the summer heat on these bad boys! Other important improvements see these become walkthrough trains, and TfL have also splurged on LED screens, which will display routes and announce the next station.

It’s all part of TfL’s Deep Tube Upgrade Programme, which will also see the network get modern signalling, and the continued rollout of those safety doors the Jubilee line currently has. You’d better get used to these trains, because you’ll be seeing a lot of them over the next forty years. That’s how long they’ll be in service, meaning there’s little room for buyers remorse here.

The Piccadilly line is just the first tube line to be blessed with new trains. Before long, you’ll see them on the Bakerloo, Waterloo & City, and Central lines. Air conditioning on the Central line! Did you ever think you’d live to see this day?
