This May, the Southbank Centre will transform into a whimsy safe haven for Moomin fans, with an enchanting installation taking over their Riverside Terrace. The installation is a celebration of the timeless appeal of these endearing characters, inviting families to explore their playful and creative sides at this remarkable recreation of the iconic Moominhouse.
There will even be some unmissable events to boot including storytime and workshops, all celebrating the 80th anniversary of Tove Jansson’s beloved book series, and the Moomin characters.
This special takeover is entitled Moomin 80, an exciting collaboration between the Southbank, Counterpoints Arts, and Moomin Characters Ltd that celebrates themes of inclusivity and belonging.
For fans of the franchise, the Moominhouse is a symbol of safety and love, where the door is always open and everyone is welcome if they need it. This installation will honour this, with visitors allowed to explore the house daily from Friday 23 May until Sunday 1 June 2025 (2 pm to 5 pm).

The first Moomin story is 1945’s The Moomins and the Great Flood, which mirrored the wartime reality of many refugees at the time. Today it can be read as a parable of the climate crisis and other global crises.
As for the installation, it will be built by Woodland Tribe, who go all over the UK promoting adventure play and child-led building. They have had work exhibited and presented at the Tate Modern, Compton Verney Art Gallery, as well as leading UK festivals like Glastonbury or Shambala.
The installation includes interactive Play, Make, Dream sessions, where kids can engage in fun activities, foster their creativity, and some well-needed community spirit.
However, this is part of a larger initiative at the Southbank Centre brining family-fun to the forefront of their springtime schedule. Over the course of the Easter holidays and May half-term, a vibrant family-focused programme promises something for everyone. From roaring family shows and fun-filled music and dance workshops, to intriguing installations and plenty of free events. For more information, click here.
If you need a lil’ Moomin fix before the Southbank Centre event, there’s a Moomin shop in Covent Garden that sells adorable merch and trinkets. Check out out guide to the area, here.
