Before opening its permanent home in Hanover Square, Mardy’s is taking its sandwiches on tour with a series of pop-ups across London.
First stop? Shreeji Newsagents. And honestly, there aren’t many better places to introduce a new food concept than one of London’s most iconic corner shops.
Because Shreeji isn’t really a corner shop anymore. Since opening in 1982, it’s become a cult destination that’s part newsagent, part speciality coffee stop and part design institution.
It’s been championed by everyone from Virgil Abloh to Tracey Emin, and was once named one of London’s coolest newsagents by The Times. Not a sentence you hear every day, but somehow it makes perfect sense.
Mardy’s slotted right in, confidently bringing sandwiches into very good company. From the Club Mardy, tuna melt, coronation chicken served without ceremony but with a borderline obsessive attention to detail.
Mardy’s is heading to Richmond for a second pop-up
If you missed the first round, Mardy’s is heading west for a second pop-up in Richmond this weekend.
Running from Friday July 17 to Sunday July 19, this one lands at 84 Hill Rise, open from 10:00 to 17:00 daily. This time it’s Mardy’s doing its thing solo, which means the sandwiches are the main event (as they should be).
Founded by Daniel Koukarskikh, Mardy’s is built on a deceptively simple idea: sandwiches deserve better. Not bigger, not trendier just better made, better sourced, and taken slightly more seriously than your average desk lunch.
It’s fast, it’s counter-service, but it borrows its mindset from fine dining with ingredients that actually taste like something. The result sits somewhere between grab-and-go and “wait, why is this sandwich so good?”
Visually, the brand leans into a hand-illustrated world centred on a quietly philosophical character, essentially the inner monologue of a Londoner who has opinions about bread quality (fair).
Koukarskikh describes Mardy’s as “proudly British, straightforward, unpretentious, and grumpy about quality,” which, in London terms, might be the strongest possible endorsement.
