It seems that London’s accolades just keep rolling in this year. After having been named the best place in the world to visit for 2023, the best city in the world for nine years running, and the most interesting city in Europe to visit, just to name a few, the big smoke has been bestowed another honour as the most searched destination for flights in the world during 2023.
Data from the new ‘Year in Travel’ report done by eDreams ODIGEO has revealed that London is at the top of people’s minds around the world when it comes to deciding where their next travel destination should be. Perhaps they heard word of all of the fabulous accolades that the city has under its belt. London was able to beat out stiff competition from Paris who came in second, New York City in third, followed by Bangkok and Barcelona in fourth and fifth.
For the top booked destinations in 2023, London managed to get third place behind Paris who nabbed first place and Barcelona who took second. More data from the report has revealed that our beloved capital seems to be quite popular with our friends in Germany as London was the second most booked destination for Germans, the third most popular booked destination for Portuguese, and sixth on the list for popular destinations for Spaniards.
For those curious about what our fellow Brits had their eyes set on for travel, Dublin came out on top as the most popular booked destination and interestingly all top destinations were short-haul. 76% of destinations Brits travelled to in 2023 were continental showing that they were making the most of what Europe had to offer. Data from across the board reveals that London is consistently one of the most popular destinations globally which we’re pretty chuffed with after all London does have heaps and heaps to offer all year round so it’s no surprise it’s one of the most popular kids on the block to visit.
Dana Dunne, CEO of eDreams ODIGEO has said, “Our research shows that travel continues to be a very important part of people’s lives. When we look at the global travel map for 2023, traditional hotspots like Paris, Barcelona and London remain firm favourites. But, we have also seen long-haul destinations like Bangkok, Las Vegas, and New York grow in popularity this year. That’s really exciting as it shows how travellers are embracing the plethora of choice, information and inspiration available to them thanks to new technologies like AI and increasingly influential social media platforms like TikTok.”
