London runs on the power of plants.
Long gone are the days when veganism was a fringe movement, eyed suspiciously by those more accustomed to kebabs than kale. Times change quickly though, and now even the notoriously not-with-the-times Telegraph is acknowledging the power of plants, claiming that veganism put Boris Johnson in 10 Downing Street. And perhaps the crowning achievement of veganism’s rise to the top is the news that London is the best city in the world for vegans and vegetarians.
Researchers from cheap getaway site Globehunters have been crunching the numbers to see which holiday destinations offer the best cuisine for vegans and vegetarians. By conducting a super-scientific sweep of Instagram, and matching it up with the number of veggie and vegan restaurants, the relative cost of a meal, and animal and environmental protections scores, fair London triumphed over the lot, beating out the likes of Paris, New York City, Barcelona, and Madrid in the process.
No surprise really, we’ve got an embarrassment of vegan restaurants to choose from, along with a vegan cheesemonger, a vegan chocolate shop, a vegan bakery, and some of the filthiest, most delicious vegan junk food in existence. The research identified over 4000 veggie friendly restaurants, and 152 dedicated solely to vegans, all of which was enough to net us the crown. Long may we reign!
