Only the Le Bun boys could have pulled this one off: take over a swanky boutique hotel in Clerkenwell and fill it with messy buns and finger-lickin’ fries that will have you reaching out for napkins and slurping up the juices. It’s sophistication meets total bad manners. Fine dining meets pop-up. France meets America. And we’ve got two words for you: it works.
Until the 20th December, Le Bun will be serving up its delicious range of French-inspired burgers at The Zetter Hotel in Clerkenwell; taking over both their restaurant and kitchen, as well as decking out the venue with vintage televisions, boom boxes, cinemax projectors and VHS players to create an American diner feel, with all the 50s fun that comes with pink neon lighting. The menu is filled with all the classics, including Le Bourguignon Bun – a slow and low pulled beef shin coated in a bourguignon glaze, with bacon salt, truffle mayo, champagne slaw, all sandwiched between a brioche bun – and Le Duck Frites Bun, with confit duck meat so soft, you can almost spread it. It’s inspired fusion cooking like this that has made the boys famous and after one bite, we can understand why.
Exciting new additions to the menu include Duck “Fries” Poutine and Le Truffle Double Double. The portion sizes at Le Bun are more on the ‘French finesse’ side than the ‘d’ya wanna supersize that’, so the latter, composed of two aged brisket & chuck patties, truffled veal jam, truffle mayo and american cheese, sandwiched between a brioche bun is definitely a good pick if you want to indulge (heavily).
The Le Bun boys also serve up a killer brunch on weekends, with the option of turning it into a very boozy affair by adding bottomless prosecco for just £15 extra. Standout dishes include Pig Cheek Hash and the brilliantly outlandish Truffles N Waffles; an experimental conflation of southern fried chicken, shaved autumn truffle, house waffles, maple and truffle butter and red wine jus.
If that’s not enough, Le Bun will also be feeding the crowds with their whacky creations at London’s favourite festive experience, Winter Wonderland in Hyde Park. Something tells us that combination will make for a very Happy Christmas.
