Stop motion fans, brace yourselves! The LAIKA: Frame x Frame exhibition is currently on display at BFI Southbank, perfect if you’re obsessed with the twisted charm of Coraline or the spooky undertones in ParaNorman.
This free exhibition lets you explore over 700 artefacts from the beloved stop-motion animation studio, allowing you to get up close and personal with the hand-crafted puppets, sets, and props used in their Oscar-nominated films.
Step into Coraline‘s Other Garden, or take a wander through the Boxtrolls’ underground cavern, and marvel at the Samurai from Kubo. You’ll even get a sneaky peek at LAIKA’s upcoming film Wildwood, which looks like an absolute dream.
Some of the sets, props, and puppets have been recreated to be ‘human scale’, directly immersing you in your favourite films and allowing you to explore their kooky worlds, all coinciding with displays that are packed with their impressive archival collection.
Alongside the exhibition, BFI has been hosting a fantastic stop-motion season with screenings of LAIKA classics like Missing Like, and other cult favourites from other staple studios, such as Chicken Run by Aardman, or Tim Burton’s Corpse Bride. It’s also the perfect time to see Coraline with spooky season coming up, and the film celebrating its 15th anniversary.
Since this is an epic celebration of stop-motion, you can also expect talks, workshops, and beyond until the exhibition closes. However, we highly suggest visiting the exhibit if that’s all you’ve got time for. However, you better be quick as the exhibition is only running until Tuesday, October 1.
Admission is free but booking is strongly advised as the event is selling out on certain days. For more information and to book your spot, click here to visit the BFI website.
📍You can find LAIKA: Frame x Frame at BFI Southbank until October 1, located at Belvedere Rd, London SE1 8XT. Nearest stations are Waterloo and Embankment.
