One of Central London’s cinemas will close its doors for the final, with the Odeon announcing that its Covent Garden spot will show its final film ahead of this weekend. Odeon Surrey Quays is also set to follow suit one week later.
The Covent Garden space was originally designed and opened as Saville Theatre, before being converted to a cinema in 1970. It’s been operated by Odeon for nearly 25 years, but now it shut up shop on August 11.
As reported by Time Out, Odeon released a statement on the news, saying: “Odeon confirms it will be closing its Covent Garden and Surrey Quays cinemas, due to redevelopment plans taking place at both sites by the respective landlords.”
“Supporting our local cinema teams is our number one priority,’ said Odeon in the statement. ‘We will be looking to secure jobs for as many of them as possible in one of our other local cinema locations. We would like to apologise to our guests for any inconvenience this will cause.”
The publication also reported earlier this year that there were plans for the Grade II-listed space in Covent Garden to become a multi-storey entertainment space with a theatre and hotel.
The nine-screen Surrey Quays space is due to close a week later on August 18, and it will shut as a result of the Canada Water regeneration project. A new Tesco superstore and 384 are due to be built in the space, which is also resulting in the closure of Hollywood Bowl and Pizza Hut.
Odeon Covent Garden will shut this weekend on August 11, with Odeon Surrey Quays closing on August 18.
