Still slutty for eggs? Of course you are, lockdown can’t change that about you.
Stop sniggering so you can process this news: London has, since spring 2019, had a restaurant named Eggslut—yes, Eggslut is its name—and now a second one has arrived. The egg-loving restaurant has made quite a splash since opening last year, and though a second site in Fitzrovia had been delayed by, you know, the total shutdown of life as we know it, they’ve finally opened the doors today (July 15) – which leaves them primed to really crack the London restaurant scene in a big way. Eggslut initially started off as a street food truck in Los Angeles back in 2011. They then opened their first permanent site inside Grand Central Market in 2013. Fast forward to today, and the Fitzrovia joint brings their total to nine restaurants; four in LA, one in Las Vegas, one each in Tokyo and Kuwait City, and now two in London, which are the first Eggsluts in Europe.
Already open on the famous Portobello Road in the heart of Notting Hill, Eggslut sits alongside many other foodie institutions, independent shops and, of course, that antiques market. The US chain has brought their signature dishes to the UK, including The Slut – made from a coddled egg on top of a smooth potato puree, all poached in a jar and served with baguette slices. There’s also The Fairfax, which is essentially a cheesy scrambled egg sandwich served in a brioche bun. I’m into it, tbh.
There’s also the Gaucho, which features seared wagyu tri-tip steak, over medium egg, chimichurri, red onions, and dressed rocket in a bun. Eggslut make heavy use of British producers too, with all their bread coming from Bread Ahead, their coffee from Nude Coffee Roasters, and those all important eggs from Clarence Court. No yolking around when it comes to sourcing, clearly.
With the Fitzrovia restaurant arriving into a brave new world, Eggslut have made a few changes to the way their restaurants look and operate. They’ve launched in line with the current government lockdown guidelines, and have changed the design of the restaurant to maintain social distancing – including a one-way walking system, plastic screens at the till, and cashless payment only (the Notting Hill store has also been adapted to fit this blueprint). Staff will wear masks and gloves, and best of all, Eggslut have hired hospitality workers who’ve been made redundant as a result of the coronavirus outbreak, which is jolly decent of them.
