Grab your sun cream and you swimming cozzies, folks, because we’re heading on another trip to the seaside. Where are we off to this time, I hear you ask? A surreptitious Sussex spot that’s just been named one of the best beaches in Britain, of course.
Cuckmere Haven
The scenic stretch of seaside in question comes in the form of Cuckmere Haven. This quaint and quiet pebbly beach sits in the shadow of the iconic Seven Sisters Cliffs at the mouth of Cuckmere River. It’s a pretty perfect place to be if you’re into walking, wildlife, watersports, and watching the world go by. And it really comes as no surprise that this breathtaking beach has recently been named among the very best in Britain by The Times.
Cuckmere Haven is home to a set of pretty famous Coastguard Cottages that have been picturesquely perched on the edge of the cliff for over 200 years now. Alongside these cute-as-a-button cottages and possibly the most breathtaking view of the Seven Sisters Cliffs you’ll ever lay your eyes on; the wreck of a German sailing ship can be seen at very low tide. So there’s certainly no shortage of gorgeous things to gawp at.
Cuckmere Haven has also earnt itself a rather impressive CV and can be seen on screen in the legendary likes of ‘Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire’, ‘Luther’, and a Cheryl Cole music video. And as far as I’m concerned, that last accolade alone makes this stunning coastal spot worth a visit.
Getting to Cuckmere Haven from London
Cuckmere Haven is approximately an hour’s drive from London – and there are two fairly large car parks available nearby (South Hill Barn and Seven Sisters Country Park). Non-drivers can hop on a train from Clapham Junction to Lewes, and then swap to a connecting service down to Seaford. From Seaford, you can opt for the 4.5 mile coastal walk to Cuckmere Haven or you can hop on a local bus.
