If you’re ardently against the combination of sweet and salty, of savoury and sugary, you might want to look away now. One of London’s most popular doughnut merchants, Crosstown Doughnuts, has partnered up with Burger & Lobster for an all-new menu item at the latter’s London restaurants. They’ve put their heads, and their ingredients, together to come up with the Crosstown Doughnut Burger.
That’s right folks, they’re taking each of their specialisations and (almost literally) smashing them together.
And sure, a doughnut burger is not necessarily the most outrageous burger invention of all time. Examples of a doughnut being used in place of burger buns can be found in American baseball stadiums, restaurants, and state fairs, and date back to the mid-to-late 00’s. The Americans even have a name for it: the Luther Burger. It also showed up in an episode of Man Vs. Food. (Does anyone else think the food challenges from back then look relatively tame compared to the monstrosities that get trotted out nowadays?)
But Burger & Lobster and Crosstown have taken it a step beyond previous iterations.
On the doughnut burger
We’ll turn it over to the team at Burger & Lobster to describe the glazed behemoth:
The limited-edition doughnut burger will consist of three prime-cut smashed beef patties, fried red onion, crispy smoked bacon and tangy blue cheese, served in Crosstown’s Tongan Vanilla Bean Glaze doughnut featuring their signature fluffy sourdough base.
Yup, that’s right – the burger has three whole patties, not just (the relatively achievable and understandable) one or two. And then they’ve only gone and added a blue cheese sauce to it! Which to me is a step too far, frankly. I’m all for sweet and salty, and I love a funky cheese – but sweet, salty, and funky altogether is where I draw the line.
And yet… I’d probably still try it…
Said Howard Ebison, CEO at Crosstown:
“The Tongan Vanilla Bean Glaze doughnut has been on Crosstown’s line-up since the brand’s inception. Being able to reimagine such a staple, creating the perfect sweet and savoury doughnut burger has been such an exciting experience.
“Teaming up with Burger & Lobster felt like a no-brainer. With both brands being London born, each crafting premium products with the very best ingredients, from scratch every day. It’s the perfect match.”
The Burger & Lobster X Crosstown Doughnut Burger is available now at all nine of Burger & Lobster’s London locations. But if you want to try to messy beast of a burger, you’ll have to act fast as it’s only around for a limited time.
