Nestled in the Sussex countryside, within the beautiful South Downs National Park, you’ll find this glamping haven with all sorts of quirky units to sleep in: from ‘Angus’ the fire engine, to two higgledy-piggledy treehouses that could be straight out of a Grimm’s fairytale. And of course, a 1964 Routemaster bus, which would have once shuttled London commuters around the capital.
These days, the ‘Holiday Bus’ is now parked up in a charming wood just a short 55 minute train ride from London Victoria, and spends its days as an offbeat bedsit for couples and families looking to escape the city. Blackberry Wood is a small, family-friendly campsite, and it’s the perfect spot for an outdoorsy staycation, especially if you’re looking for something a bit different.
We expect your time here will be spent either toasting marshmallows on the campfire, walking in the surrounding woodlands, or tucking into a roast dinner at a local pub. When you’re not getting cosy inside the bus, that is (there’s underfloor heating, don’t you know).
Perhaps the best thing of all though, is the ‘Guinea Pig World’ just outside your door. Home to Marmite, Toast and Ginger, who have been rescued and re-homed at Blackberry Wood, this little area is a lovely space for the guinea pigs to live and be spoiled. Importantly, it’s not a petting experience — you won’t be able to handle the guinea pigs. But you are welcome to bring them some fruit or vegetables to snack on, such as watermelon, raw peppers, or lettuce.
The bus sleeps a family of up to five people, or two couples. There’s a bathroom with a shower and toilet on board, as well as a kitchen and lounge area. You will need to bring your own towels and bedding, but other basic amenities will be provided, including toilet roll, washing up liquid, a kettle and cafetière, as well as cutlery and crockery.
